School Officially Opens June 03, 2019 – DEPED

It is now official! For all the parents, guardians, teachers and students out there spanning the Metro and the entire Philippine archipelago; classes in all public elementary and high school starts on June 03, 2019.

This developed as Education Secretary Leonor Briones of the Department of Education (DepEd) signed in a memorandum DepEd Order No. 7, Series of 2019 that the School Calendar for School Year 2019-2020 will start on the first Monday of June (03) with the last day of classes to be held Friday, April 3, 2020.

This constitutes to a total 203 school days. However, private schools were allowed to tinker with their respective school calendars provided they still comply with existing laws stating: classes may not start earlier than the first Monday of June, nor later than the last day of August.

Public schools, on the other hand, are allowed to adjust their respective calendars to accommodate the celebration of local and/or national celebrations within their respective jurisdiction, which is deemed “beneficial” to students.

Such instances where class suspensions are inevitable, especially during calamities like storms, earthquakes and fire outbreak, make-up classes and other alternative forms can be utilized to compensate for lost time. These activities, however, must go through the process with approval of the school administrators, teachers and parents of the concerned students.

As part of the guidelines implemented by DepEd for the upcoming school year, school officials are highly encouraged to conduct worthwhile activities done “outside the classroom” like science and school fairs, interschool sports, job fairs and career orientation, and the like.

Aiming for a smooth opening of classes, DepEd once again created taskforce OBE or the Oplan Balik Eskwela to make sure everything works out as planned. Other local government agencies included in this endeavour are the Department of Health, Defence, DILG, the Department of Energy, DTI, Social Welfare and DPWH. Representatives from these departments will meet by May 8, and push trhough with the OBE from May 27 until June 7, 2019.
