Moving Forward to Better Education

It has been quite a while for the Philippines to grab the headlines in the Education sector, as the University of the Philippines (UP) soared back into the fray to be among the elite top 100 higher education institutions in Asia.

Acknowledged as the premier institution of higher learning in the Philippine Archipelago, the University of the Philippines surged 61 rungs higher from its 2018 standing of 156th to its current 2019 Asia ranking of 95 in the 2019 Times Higher Education's Top Asian University Rankings. This remarkable feat further solidified UP’s legacy of being the undisputed top ranked education institution in the country.

Bring true to its motto “Honor and Excellence,” the University of the Philippines continues to improve, not only in the area of academic teaching and research, but also in its increased number of citations and perception of the international community as a whole. It is now ranked 4th best among the best universities in Southeast Asia; just behind the previous No. 1 institution National University of Singapore (NUS, slid down to 2nd overall in Asia), Nanyang Technological University also of Singapore (NTU, now 6th down from No. 5), and the University of Malaya of Malasia (38th, 8 ranks up from 46th).

The other universities in the region, which incidentally ranked higher than the UP last 2018, fell behind the Philippines’ top university are as follows: Universiti Teknologi Petronas (98th, up from 114th), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (111th, down from 99th), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (now 125th, up from 129th) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (188th, going down 46 rungs from 142nd), all leading universities from Malaysia. Also making significant headway amongst the top 200 is Indonesia’s top university, the University of Indonesia at 133rd (a big up surge from the 201-250 group of last year).

There is much to be improved on the Education sector for the Philippines for it to go head-to-head with the other top universities in Asia. So far, only 2 Philippine universities has breached the top 300 rankings: UP at 95th, and the De La Salle University at far 263rd,.

The Top 5 Universities in the world today are: Ranks 1 and 2 from the United Kingdom: University of Oxford and University of Cambridge, Stanford University at 3rd, Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 4th, and California Institute of Technology at 5th. Rounding up ranks 5-10 are Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Imperial College London, and University of Chicago.

Asia’s Top 5 universities are: Tsinghua University of China wresting the top spot, National University of Singapore sliding down to 2nd, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Hong Kong, and Peking University of China. The University of Tokyo in Japan hold steady at No. 8.
