Who Is Maria Corazon C. Aquino?

A woman who led a very peaceful revolution against her husband's rival, Mr. Ferdinand Marcos.
She gave independence to the Philippines. Her name?  Maria Corazon C. Aquino.

At start, she was just a normal housewife to Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., who was later assassinated on his return from the United States of America. When he passed away, she was drafted to run against Ferdinand Marcos and Salvador Laurel to be her running mate.  When Marcos called for a snap election, the election was held on February 7, 1986.  He was proclaimed the president and Aquino called for a massive civil disobedience protest. She claimed that Marcos cheated and she was the supposed president. The Filipinos enthusiastically joined and rallied behind her. As many Filipinos came and joined her, they were held responsible for The Edsa Revolution as they stood hand and hand in prayer. This was the first Revolution that did not contain bloodshed. Marcos tried to stop them but they were too strong for him and his military. With this in hand, Marcos gave up and Aquino became the 11th president of the Philippines and the first woman to be the president in the Philippines.

She oversaw the change of constitution where it limited the powers of the president and established a bicameral legislature. Her administration gave strong emphasis and concern on civil rights and human rights. She also centered on strengthening the economic health and confidence and focused on a marketing oriented and socially responsible economy. She faced natural calamities and disasters until the end of her term in 1992. She was replaced by Fidel V. Ramos. She returned to her private life but stayed in the public eye due to her daughter Kris Aquino a movie star or actress. She was diagnosed with colon cancer and survived a one year battle and passed away on August 1, 2009. She left us her symbol, The Letter " L " and forming it with her hand. It stood for Laban. Now, her son, Noynoy Aquino is the current president.
